Bench with iron decoration

I created this bench with a wish to fuse wood and iron into a smooth, flat surface. The basic shape of the object remained as simple as possible, thus accentuating the iron accessory.

Initial idea was iron accessory which was created in a forging technique inspired by art forgery of the past.

After finishing the first part, I had to think hard about what to do next. I couldn’t just hammer the iron piece into the wood. The solution was to carve a mortise into which I later fixed the accessory.

A lot of dexterity and patience was needed to join the iron component with the wooden base because the mortise had to match with the tenon completely.

Finally, I cleaned the bench and coated it with several layers of protective oil.

One bench is made from pear wood and iron and the other one is a combination of walnut wood and copper.
