The furniture that you choose for your home can serve as a starting point for your decorating scheme, providing a palette of favorite colors or the beginnings of a specific style. Or it can be inspired by a distinctive element that you alredy have- an Oriental rug found at an antiques store, a drop- lid desk with a decorative paint finish, even a conteporary work of art.

Although aesthetics play an important part in furniture selection, there’s more to consider than just good looks. A piece needs to please the eye, but also provide comfort and complement your personal sense of style. Above all, it should suit your lifestyle. If you’re laid- back, consider a sofa conducive to sprawling out on; if  you’re more formal, opt for wingback chairs with sit- up- straight support.

Good construction is another key consideration. Doors and drawers should glide easily and have interlocking joinery as opposed to a frame build from wood pieces simply butted together. Upholstery can be a bit more difficult to evaluate initially, but don’t be timid; pick up that sofa or chair and turn it over to look for a sturdy frame and springs.
